A Medici Villa...
"While this building was being constructed Cosimo de'Medici decided to build his own palace, and he therefore explained his intentions to Filippo (Brunelleschi), who put everything else aside and made for Cosimo a very beautiful and large model of this palace, which Filippo wanted to place in the piazza facing San Lorenzo, isolated on every side. Filippo's virtuosity was so clearly displayed in this model that it seemed too luxurious and grand to Cosimo, and, more to avoid envy than the expense, he gave up the idea of using Filippo's plan. While Filippo was working on the model, he used to thank fate for the opportunity of building such a home--something he had desired to do for many years--and for having come upon someone who wanted and was able to build it. But then when he learned of Cosimo's decision not to go on with the project he angrily broke his model into a thousand pieces. And Cosimo was very sorry not to have followed Filippo's plan, for he lated constructed the other palace, and he used to say that he had never conversed with a man of greater courage and intelligence than Filippo..." This passage reminded me of my trip to Italy, where a few years ago I visited a Medici Villa of Petraia. This is from my travel journal from the trip. It's a little... condensed in the middle but a pretty good representation. When you turn around from this view you can see the whole valley, the Duomo in the distance, and even the river Arno.
Just thought I'd share this today:

Life Sketches: Russell Broom
A good friend surprised me with tickets to Jann Arden this past weekend! Before they told us we could take pictures I did a few sketches. This is one of them - the talented guitarist Russell Broom.

Enor
I'm working on the illustrations for a Christmas story involving a mouse named Enor, written by Rev. Gene Packwood. Here is a simple pencil crayon/pen sketch of him.
World, meet Enor. Enor, meet the world!

What about Darth Maul?
So, I had some fun at the Comic Expo yesterday. I wandered around talking to various artists, looking at their INCREDIBLE work! A guy named Louie Del Carmen was really inspiring (he does storyboards for The Rugrats and Kim Possible), as well as David Colman.
Also, got to see some celebrities: Ray Parks (Darth Maul), Morena Baccarin (The Orisi from Stargate SG:1, also on Firefly), Christina Hendricks (Firefly), and oh yah... Robert Picardo (The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager)! How fun was that, they were so accessible too!
One of my favourite parts I caught on video. Watch Darth Maul weild his lightsabre here.
Also got some promo pieces for "The Shatner Show" occurring this summer at the Uppercase Gallery. Some ACAD peers are involved so I'm really excited for it!

Life Sketches: Jeff
Jeff, a missionary from Northern Africa, shared with us today about moving foward into the callings we've received. Not to just wait, but to take the initiative and push open the door.
"Get out of bed and get dressed! Don't loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute. Dress yourselves in Christ, and be up and about!" Romans 13:14 MSG

Life Sketches: Traced Image
I was inspired recently to start sketching more in day to day life, especially subject matter which moves quickly and is hard to capture. I'll post more here as I do more.
This is from Saturday night when I went to hear a band called Traced Image.

Communication
©2002 Bethany Vanderputten
Medium: Acrylic + FW Ink on Gessoed Denim
I created this illustration for TEC Calgary in 2002 as part of a series of 10 banners which convey the topics of talks like "Who am I?", "Friendship", "Communication", etc. They were all sewn into banners with various colors of matting and these were hung on wooden dowling with a thick cord attached. (See example to the left). This banner was created for the talk entitled 'Communication'.
The following is an example of a preliminary sketch for this piece:
